Dwelling number

[ Av: Grethe Thoresen. Publisert: 08.02.10, oppdatert: 24.02.10 ]

In 1999 the Norwegian Parliament decided that all dwellings will have its own unique address.

By providing your full address which include your dwelling number, to the National Population Registry, the rescue services will save valuable time in finding your apartment in case of emergency. It is important to note that dwelling number is a prerequisite for installing fixed telephone services, broadband and internet connection.

It will also make it easier to produce reliable statistics on how people live in Norway, and facilitate housing policy planning by municipalities.

When moving

When you move to a new location, you must fill out a form reporting your new address, including the new dwelling number, for the National Population Registry.

Dwelling number will also be used in connection with legal registration.

Address label

Dwelling number consists of a letter and four digits. The dwelling number is written on a label which either may be located in the doorframe of the entrance door of your flat or on the front side of the entrance door.  If you receive an address label for your apartment in the mail, please glue it to the front (outer) side of your entrance door.

The letter and the first two digits indicate the actual floor on which the apartment is located, and the last two digits indicate the apartment number, counting from left to right. For example, H0201: H denotes main floor, 02 denotes second floor and 01 denotes the first dwelling on the left hand side.
