In 2000, the leaders and heads of state of 189 countries signed the Millennium Declaration, which set a series of targets
for global action against poverty by 2015. Meeting the goals, known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) (http://www.un.org/millenniumgoals/)
could make a positive difference to millions of people.
As an important contribution to the fight against poverty, the Government of Norway, along with other Nordic countries, played
a key role in defining the need for the Commission on Legal Empowerment of the Poor - a new, independent, global initiative
– that sets out to explore how nations can reduce poverty through reforms that expand access to legal protection and opportunities
for all.
