Marine Primary Data

[ Av: Minika Bjørge. Publisert: 20.03.07, oppdatert: 26.08.10 ]

Marine primary data consists mainly of seamless depth data and coastline data, in vector format.

Primary data are marine geodata of the best quality including bathymetry, coastline, lights and other navigational aids, as well as other maritime infrastructure such as pipelines and cables. Primary data is produced by the Norwegian Hydrographic Service in Stavanger and is continuously updated with new measurements from internal and external sources.

Contents
• Bathymetry (depth points, depth curves with depth areas, shallows/reefs, intertidal zones, etc.) and coastline. The density of the points vary with the source and depth, with the densest points having a distance of 50 meters.
• Lights, other navigational aids, pipelines and cables, etc. Alle of these data come from external sources, and the Norwegian Hydrographic Service can guarantee neither the content nor the degree of up-to-dateness of this data set.
Format
The data can be supplied in two formats, SOSI or Shape. The Norwegian Hydrographic Service can provide data for the whole country or divided into counties, and can also provide customized data delivery on request.

Standard
The typical scales range between 1:10,000 and 1:30,000, but other map scales can also be used.

Data Viewing Services
Data are available for viewing through WMS services in official portals, such as www.mareano.no and www.geonorge.no.

Free services, trial period during 2010
In December 2009 the Norwegian Mapping Authority released some of the WMS services for private use. See the list of available services and terms of use here.

Ordering data
Data can be ordered from the Norwegian Hydrographic Service, Department for Distribution, e-mail sjodata@statkart.no.
Members of Norway Digital have free access to the marine primary data through the downloading portal www.geonorge.no.

Applications
Marine geodata can be used for presentation of the terrain variation of the seabed. The data can be used in planning, for analysis and for construction purposes. The data cannot be used for navigation.
