The International Conference on Cities and Climate Change held in Oslo on 17 March 2009. It was jointly organised by UN-HABITAT
and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway.
The main objective of the Conference was to develop a common understanding on issue and challenges on Cities and Climate Change, and identify opportunities for forging effective north-south partnerships and networks for technology, finance, and knowledge transfer, with specific focus on the building, transport, and west management sectors.
This activity is part of the Cities and Climate Change Initiative, a component of the Sustainable Urban Development Network.
The Conference brought together about 100 international and Norwegian participants from public, private, and civil society from Norway; Cities and Climate Change Initiative; partner cities’ representatives
of Sorsogon, Kampala, Esmeraldas, and Maputo; UN-HABITAT staff; and resource persons drawn from other UN partner institutions
and Academia.
The Conference also aimed to promote the role of cities in developing and implementing climate change policies and strategies,
which will feature prominently at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change COP15 in Copenhagen in December 2009.
The Conference report and proceedings are under preparation and will be available shortly.
